Info on our WoodSongs Coffeehouse - Please Read!

Folksinger Michael Johnathon has devoted his career to spreading the artistic ideals of folk music worldwide, and his syndicated radio show, the WoodSongs Old-Time Radio Hour is his musical gift to those who care to listen. The WoodSongs Coffeehouse is the natural, next step in this effort. Each local chapter provides an independent stage for regional artists and gives the audience a chance to explore the rich world of music that exists in their own hometowns.

The latest WoodSongs Coffeehouse is preparing to launch right here in Oldham County in a partnership with the Oldham County Parks and Recreation Department.  The Coffeehouse will provide a home for the budding “roots music” scene in Oldham County.  “Roots music” can best be described as an acoustic-oriented style that may include, but is not limited to: Bluegrass, Country, Gospel/Spiritual and Singer/Songwriter.  The WoodSongs Coffeehouse will be a family friendly venue with a close-knit, homey feel where new players and seasoned performers will be given the opportunity to teach and learn from each other through shared experiences.  Musicians of all skill levels are encouraged to come prepared to listen closely and play freely.

Artists will be given an opportunity to perform (solo or group) for 15 minutes by signing up with the coffeehouse “Percolator”, Parks and Recreation Director and Singer/Songwriter, Tim Curtis.  A small PA will be provided but the coffeehouse setting does not lend itself to full bands with amplifiers and drum sets needing to be moved on & off the pickin’ carpet.  Also, please bear in mind that song content must keep with the family atmosphere and will be monitored closely.  After five or six scheduled performances, the format will become more free-form (beans & greens time) with smaller groups breaking off for side sessions and various other musical confabs.  As a first of its kind in Oldham County, the coffeehouse may need some tweaking to maximize the experience for players and interested listeners/spectators.

The WoodSongs Coffeehouse will be held at the John W. Black Community Center, 1551 N. Hwy 393, LaGrange, KY on the third Thursday of March (15th), April (19th) and May (17th) from 6:30-8:30 pm.  To sign up for a performance time or for additional information, contact Tim Curtis at (502)225-0655.  It is not necessary to schedule a performance to play during beans & greens time, just bring your instrument(s) and be ready to kick back & cut loose! Select performances are available to view on the OCWoodSongs YouTube Channel.
