What
is GIS?
GIS (Global Information Systems) is a computer system for capturing, storing,
checking, manipulating, analyzing and displaying data related to positions
on the Earth’s surface. Typically, GIS is used for handling maps
of one kind or another. These might be represented as several different
layers where each layer holds data about a particular kind of feature.
Each feature is linked to a position on the graphical image on a map and
a record in an attribute table.
What
does GIS do for me as a resident of the county?
It lets you understand your community better, and helps the officials
in your community serve you better. It tells you where high crime zones
are, where your children go to school, where your voting district is,
where flood zones are, and helps officials protect you from things like
hazardous materials releases and storm damage just to name a few.
How
is GIS used in the addressing process?
The GIS system is used to maintain a database of streets, parcels, and
addresses. By utilizing tools within the GIS program, an addressing coordinator
can assure all addresses conform to established standards and are made
immediately available to emergency responders and others needing the information.
How
do I get an address for a new parcel created by a property sell-off?
Submit a minor plat survey to the Planning & Zoning GIS (Global Information
Systems) department. An address will be issued for the new parcel and
notification will be made to Oldham
County Property Valuation Administration and the U.S. Postal Service.
(Note: Please obtain the exiting parcel number from 222-9320 or 222-1476
ext. 152 and place it on the minor plat survey prior to addressing submission.)
Are
addresses containing a suffix permitted in Oldham County? examples: 1450-A,
2801 ½.
No. Oldham County follows the National Emergency Number Association and
U.S. Postal Service guidelines for addressing, which discourage the use
of suffixes in addressing.
Why
does Oldham County Planning & Zoning occasionally change an address?
Our primary concern is for the welfare and safety of our residents. An
address correction may be required to efficiently route emergency services
(Police, Fire & EMS) to your location. An address correction may also
be required when land division in your area negatively affects the address
sequence, or does not conform to the National Emergency Number Association
or U.S. Postal Service guidelines.
Who
should I contact with specific questions about addressing in Oldham County?
Contact Adam Reinhardt at 222-1476 ext. 152 (M-F 8:00-4:30) or by email.
Who
has access to GIS information?
Information of a personal nature such as property owner/resident, land/structure
value, or other sensitive information is restricted to county officials
with a legitimate need for it. General information such as parcels, streets
and addresses, that do not contain sensitive data are readily available
to anyone who desires it.
How
can I obtain unrestricted GIS data?
You may visit Oldham County Planning & Zoning
to make a request for information. Fees may apply depending upon the type
and amount of information requested.
Is
GIS information available on-line?
The on-line GIS server is currently undergoing renovation. We plan to
offer general information similar to that provided by Google
Earth in the near future. We will post information on our website
(www.oldhamcounty.net) when the on-line GIS
system is back in operation.
